Free from an era of a tyrant, we still find that the grasp of a foul system is strong and still common. The extent of the grasp is not the government and associated systems, but the mentality of a stubborn race. This is quite evident from the number of 'DRP' supporters who gathered to wish Maumoon, after he returned to Male, recently from his shopping trip. Mentioning the shopping trip trip reminds us that the poor fellow would be devastated that he is not at the liberty to spend state funds for his personal needs now.
The grasp of the tentacles of his tyranny takes several forms. 30 years is not a short duration, and it has been proven to be enough to corrupt the mentality of a simple person. The simple person includes the educated person too. It would be a long time till we can be truly free from the culture that he has spread. The culture of slavery to the government, and opression.

May I also express my concern in a "caste system" now taking root in Maldives whereby only people who hold PhDs are supposedly the only people who can know anything about everything. Why this monopoly on thought and opinion? Doesn't the common man/woman have intelligence, too, though not all of us can afford to, or are born lucky to have gone overseas to get a PhD?
